In 2009 Andres Bedoya organized a haunting performance installation “Ultra Madre,” in which 57 women lay still on the scaffolding of the main arch of the Museo Nacional de Arte in La Paz, Bolivia. For one hour the women did not move, their long, black hair cascading down the 15-foot structure. The jarring image of the soft hair against the rigid architecture stirred a quiet but lasting sense of unease.

I was riding in the car with my friend and his dad this weekend and we were coming from the movies. As the scenery swept past me I tried to piece together the broken memories I have of my adolescent years in Columbia, Maryland. They aren’t broken in the sense that they were extremely painful or that there was any kind of hardship. Columbia, for all intents and purposes, is really BORING. But rather, I say the memories are all broken because they are little snippets here and there, but all in all very incomplete. And that’s when I realized that Maryland is not my home and it never really was.

I was born in Baltimore and I grew up in the city and 2 other suburbs on opposite ends of the city. But for as long as I can remember, Baltimore and Maryland for that matter, always felt too small to hold me. I had friends, family, boyfriends, etc. But I always felt that the moment I could escape, I would - and I did. From 17 and on, I have lived in MD periodically, but most of my friends know I have lived in other places far away (even if it was temporary). Even high school, ya know the “formative” years, is largely a blur and when I have friends talk to me about people we went to school with and events I am always saying “uhh, I don’t remember them/that”.

So that brings me to present day. I came back and I thought maybe I could stay here and just LIVE. But it’s been less than a month and I want to run far far away because this is not my home. Jason Mraz (and probably a million other people lol) said (via VH1 Storytellers) that “home is just a state of mind”. And I think this is so incredibly true. And my lack of memories tell the truth. So time for some new memories…

Hiatus and Haikus

I’m done. I’M done. I’M DONE.

Well, after however many years I finally completed my educational goal of at least getting a bachelors degree (even though I felt like I was getting a PhD). Now what do I do?

I decided that I am going to take a hiatus for at least a year. And after having a conversation with various friends, there are numerous things that I want to do during this time. I am going to list (some) all of them because if I don’t I won’t have a list and then I will forget.

1. Write a haiku - properly. I don’t think I ever really mastered this fine art and I already googled it. Follow that up with writing a short story or two as well.

2. Take some culinary arts classes. I honestly believe that if I had to do it all over again I would have been a chef. But now I will just take a class or two.

3. Go back to Paris and London and maybe Brazil. For my 30th birthday I want to go out of the country.

4. Start reading for fun again. Steve Martin’s latest has been sitting on my side table for months…time to start!

5. Either run a 5K, half marathon or do a triathlon. Anyone who is close to me knows this has been on my mind for at least 6 months…

7. Get back into yoga hard core! YogaGlo here I come….

I am sure there are a million more things I can do (ya know, like get a JOB) and I am looking forward to this break and hopefully figuring out where I go next. But I’m not stressing. My Tumblr will document all my achievements. Working on the haiku mastering today :)

Sometimes when we’re so overwhelmed by a specific trend that seems to be everywhere, you get a bit turned off by it. After much hesitation of whether or not I would be contribute to the never-ending Lita craze or not, I can gladly say that I’m happy with my decision. Fitting true to size these bad girls were quite comfortable the moment I put them on. The suede was smooth and the color is perfect. I can already see these Jeffrey Campbell shoes being a staple in my wardrobe.

Along with needing a new pair of shoes, I’m currently coveting new nail polishes for this spring and summer (and ever trying to up my collection). Yesterday, I appropriately picked up two pastel based nail polishes from China Glaze “Light as Air” and “Mint”. I was also happily surprised to see my Chanel package arrive a bit early where I had ordered “June”, “Rose Paradise”, and “Particulière”.
